From Webster's Dictionary: Affiliate-To associate, join, or connect with

If you have a website, blog, family web page or love to send emails, online companies
want you to help them get more eyes on their website.  Anytime a purchase is made
from a link that you provided, you will get a commission from that purchase.  Affiliate
links are all over the place these days and they are easy to get, maintain, and track.

The most obvious way to find affiliate links is to look at the website that you are
interested in promoting to see if they have an affiliate program.  Usually it will say
"affiliates" either at the very bottom of the home page or in the navigation bar.
Sometimes if you do a search with the company name and "affiliate", you can find it
that way.  You can also be called a "publisher" because you are publishing a link on
your website.

Some companies don't have their own affiliate program, but hire a company that
specializes in "affiliating".  For the individual, signing up with these companies makes
using affiliate links much easier.  You only have to go to one site and can sign up with
a huge number of companies.  Then pick which text links or banner links you'd like to
use, copy the HTML code and put it in your email or on your website.  All your links
are tracked in one place and your earnings will be paid to you once you get to the
minimum payout amount.  Choosing paypal instead of a check makes the process
quicker and easier.

Affiliate links work best if you have something specific to say about what you are
promoting.  Personally, I am turned off by banner after banner all thrown on one page
with no dialog about what is there or why.  Most companies allow direct product links
so you can recommend a product instead of just directing people to the entire
website.  If they enter through your link and then end up buying something else, you
will still get the credit for the sale.  Use links that will intrigue people enough to click
on them instead of just putting up company logos and banners.
